Jussie Smollett

At the end of January, Jussie Smollett- the star of American hit show ‘Empire’ was hospitalized for being under attack by two MAGA men in Chicago. The victim of hate crime reportedly said that the men were beaten up the actor shouted racist and homophobic slurs, poured bleach on him, tied a noose around his neck and started shouting trump slogans. Smollett showed up at the hospital as early as 3 O’clock in the morning heavily wounded by the attack and with a noose around his neck.

After this incident, the LGBTQ and the African- American community came together to support Smollett. The social media was filled with heartfelt messages for the actor. Singer John legend, actor Zendaya, talk show hosts Ellen and Andy Cohen and so on, the industry came together to support Jussie. It was a sight to be seen, a fraternity standing together, a community looking out for each other. The incident started a conversation around the threat to the lives of the double marginalized community, the colored individuals from the LGBTQ community. Especially since trump coming into power.

It was only until the investigation on the incident finished this week and the Chicago PD revealed that the actor manipulated the attack on himself to earn PR credits. Chicago PD chief said, the actor wasn’t satisfied with his salary from the hit show ‘Empire’ and staged the attack in order to attract more attention which in turn would result in a salary hike. It was basically another HYIP in Hollywood.

Persons of minority communities taking advantages of the of certain situations with very selfish motives, we’ve seen this again and again, especially with celebrities. This exactly how numerous dynamic movements start losing their credibility. Racist, Homophobic, Sexist people already think that minorities exaggerate our problems in order to attain privileges, incidents like these just give them an opportunity to shame the whole community. This is one of the reasons why a number of men and women refuse to believe in #MeToo because celebrities like Jussie Smollett tend to abuse the situations for their absolute self-centered intentions.

The incident could have started a very important conversation about the lives of the double marginalized individual, where even their own community tends to condemn the individuals or the certain group. But by the end of the investigation, the tables turned and it was the whole community that had to hear flack because of one person.

After the arrest of the actor Donald Trump was quick to tweet, “What about MAGA and the tens of millions of people that you insulted with you racist and dangerous comment!? #MAGA”

The tables turned quickly and according to Trump, the MAGA men have become the victims. Trump supporters were quick to hurl racism on social media.

This is exactly how one man’s selfish motives taints progress.022119-wls-jussie-smollett-mug-img
