Orange Is The New Whitewash

Thackeray – the orange leader is a biopic of Bal Keshav Thackeray and journey from a cartoonist to the person we all knew and people of Mumbai praised him to be. The movie was a constant validation of Mr. Thackeray’s actions. Watching the movie in a Marathi theatre (Plaza cinema i.e. right next to Shiv Sena Bhavan at Shivaji Park) let me in on the perspective of the exact TG the movie was made for.
Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui did an amazing job playing the amazing orator that Bal Keshav Thackeray was. Siddiqui could very well carry out the agreeableness act of Mr. Thackeray. Portraying the charisma of the person himself was surely a lot of pressure but Siddiqui managed in a very noteworthy job. Amrita Rao although not making any strong contribution to the story did a gratifying job herself.
The execution of the movie was pulled off quite adequately. The frames even though quite redundant seemed to excite the audience, camera shifting to the tiger right after Nawazuddin delivering a strong monologue made the audience whistle and clap in the theatre full of people. The use of the color palette was one of the highlights of the movie, the changing color scheme used to define the gradual movement of the story a detail to look up to.
Script-wise, the constant change of scenes and accelerating motion of events gave a sense of obscurity. Abhijit Phanse should have made an extra effort to rather portray clarity than going out of the way to defend the ideals of Bal Keshav Thackeray. One of the constant themes of the movie was to justify the principles of the Shiv Sena and the decisions made by Bal Keshav Thackeray. An unbiased stance on the topic would have given a rather authentic picture and made it more appealing to multiple TGs. But given the fact that the movie was produced by Sanjay Raut, Member of the parliament from Shiv Sena, an unbiased stance was never expected.
The conflicts in the script were limited to a few particular conversations. There was so much more to the man that the movie could have told.
The movie is a patent propaganda project. The biopic is a calculated move to give the ideals and the name of Thackeray a gloss. I think it is quite safe to say that in the forthcoming Maharashtra elections Shiv Sena might have a big candidacy announcement. No names can be taken but we know the “young” face of Shiv Sena.
The movie was quite successful in its purpose, the party and its ideals have gained back quite the popularity in few days, the next move to the movie will be seen in real life politics, presumably the forthcoming Maharashtra elections.
