The Misfit of Demon King Academy: History’s strongest Demon King reincarnates and goes to school with his descendants. This isn’t the basic one-liner overview of the plot of the show. That’s the title. Although it perfectly sums up the story. The Misfit of Demon King Academy or Demon King Academy is a Japanese light novel series written by Shu and illustrated by Yoshinori Shizuma.
Basically, After 2,000 years of endless battles and turmoil, the demon king Anos Voldigoad struck a contract with the human hero Kanon to sacrifice his own life in order for peace to blossom. When Anos reincarnates 2,000 years later, he discovers that royal demons now severely rule over lower-class hybrid demons in a society that favours Anos' pureblood descendants above demons that interbred with other species, such as humans and spirits. Anos, now a hybrid himself, aspires to recover his previous position as Demon King. Still, first, he must graduate from the Demon King Academy, where he is deemed a total misfit.
A classic cliche of its genre, no doubt. But there are a few outliers of this constantly abused genre and this anime is definitely one of them. The main character is by far my favourite MC I have seen in a long time. Anos Voldigoad, a very obviously overpowered character, shows everyone his power whenever they need to see it and even kills and resurrects a tertiary character multiple times because the character made the mistake of challenging him. The character shows an “I could kill you if I wanted to but that’s an inconvenience and waste of my time” confidence not usually found in MCs in the genre. Other than this, over time he begins to create a harem of his own but that isn’t the weird part… It's the fact that he doesn’t even look at them as anything but a means to an end. The end being literally the end of the tyranny of royal demons. There is a great character growth arc for each of the secondary characters who, without giving any spoilers, grow from hating the main character to loving the main character and from being possibly the weakest character to being able to hold their own for a bit against the main character. The world-building is a bit slow and inconclusive since they just take names of places without actually showing us or giving us a brief description of how the place is and the weather in that general area. Overall ratings would be, an 8 on 10 anime with a 9.5 on 10 character list and a 7 on 10 world-building.
If you’re looking for a short and funny but also action-packed anime, this one's for you.
