It’s been a little over a week, and we’re already pumped up for what major movie studios have to offer! Here’s a list of the most anticipated movies of 2019 (in chronological order)
Glass (January 17)
Back in 2015, fans were exhilarated when M Night Shyamalan announced ‘Split’, which served as a spinoff to his 2000’s hit ‘Unbreakable’. The film was well received across the globe and it successfully set up ‘Glass’
James McAvoy reprises his role as Kevin, a sociopath with a split personality disorder – alongside Bruce Willis as David Dunn and Samuel L Jackson as Ejijah Prince. Shyamalan combines narratives from both his previous films and brings us an action-packed thriller. As with all of his best films, expect the unexpected.
Captain Marvel (March 8)
Oscar-Winning Actress Brie Larson joins the MCU family as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. The film will revolve around her adventures in the 90’s, and her journey from being an air force pilot to the most powerful hero in the MCU! The film will also answer where has she been during all the major events that threatened the world, and why did Nick Fury wait until the decimation to contact her.
This marks Marvel’s first ever female superhero with her own movie and we couldn’t be more excited for it!
Shazam (April 5)
The DCEU takes a break from it’s dark and violent theme to bring us a comedy, delivering a light-hearted and irreverent superhero movie. Starring Zachary Levi, the story revolves around Billy Batson, a young kid who magically transforms into a grown man with Superpowers by simply saying the world ‘Shazam’
Shazam has always been a popular character in the comics and DC fans can’t wait to finally see him on the big screen.
Pet Sematary (April 5)
Jason Clark and Amy Seimetz star in this remake of Stephen King’s horror classic about a family who move into a New England house only to discover some terrifying secrets about their backyard!
Hellboy (April 12)
David Harbour – the father figure sheriff of Stranger Things, takes on the mantle of the big red demon in a reimagining of Mike Mignola’s classic comic series. This version will focus on the Nimue (a.k.a. The Queen of Blood) arc of the comics, which, among other things, involves Hellboy wielding Excalibur.
Avengers: Endgame (April 26)
If this list wasn’t in chronological order, Avengers: Endgame would surely be at the top. Probably the most anticipated movie of 2019, Endgame is a direct sequel to the heart wrenching – Avengers: Infinity War. It will conclude the unbelievable story that Infinity War setup with Thanos, and his quest to obtain the Infinity Stones. Nobody knows how this enormous story will finally conclude, but it’s sure to be one of the biggest pop culture moments in movie history. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to permanently change with this movie, and the wait to see how that all goes down is going to feel like an eternity.
Detective Pikachu (May 10)
Pokemon Fans will finally get to see the live-action take on one of it’s most beloved characters – Pikachu. Voiced by Ryan Reynolds, Pikachu is set in a universe where Pokemon’s already exist and follows the misadventures of the adorable, and quirky character.
Aladdin (May 24)
Another live action Disney remake, Aladdin is a character we all have grown up with no matter what our age. The full trailer is yet to be out, but fans are definitely excited to see Will Smith anchor the part of our beloved Genie along with Mena Massoud playing the titular character.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (May 31)
Another cinematic shared universe is on it’s way. This sequel to the 2014 remake is going to expand this world of monsters in an enormous way! This sequel will also be a lead in for Godzilla vs King Kong – the most awaited crossover in history.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (June 7)
Sophie Turner gets her shot as the leading lady with this Jean Grey-centered addition to the X-Men franchise, which also stars fellow mutant alumni James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence.
Men in Black: International (June 14)
A spinoff to the original, Men in Black reunites Thor: Ragnarok’s Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson in a comedic adventure. The trailer looks promising and dives into our favourite elements from the MIB Franchise.
Toy Story 4 (June 20)
Andy is now off to college and leaves his secretly alive toys in the hands of Molly. The Toy Story franchise has never failed to impress and the world they’ve created with living toys is surely a delight. Buzz and Woody will be back to blow us away with their quippy humour and adventures.
Spiderman: Far From Home (July 5)
Spider-Man doesn’t seem to be feeling so good these days. But after Avengers 4, he will be. Tom Holland is certainly young enough to carry his own franchise for the next 10-12 years. Far From Home kicks off an entirely new phase of the MCU, rumoured to be set minutes after Avengers: Endgame. With Peter Parker being the potential torch bearer for Marvel Studios we are all pumped up to see what he has to offer.
The Lion King (July 19)
Jon-Favreau brings back yet another classic, Lion King boasts an extravagant cast: Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé as Nala, and James Earl Jones returning as Mufasa. The animated movie touched our hearts and narrated a story which stuck to all of us. The circle of life will strike back again!
IT: Chapter Two (September 6)
Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, and Bill Hader play the adult versions of the kids who were terrorized by Bill Skarsgard’s Pennywise in the first half of Stephen King’s epic. In the second instalment, the shape-shifting entity proves he wasn’t done in the first part and there’s more to the story than we thought!
The Joker (October 4)
Separate from the DCEU, The Joker offers an origin story to the complex character, set in the ’90s. It is said to be a heist movie and with the recent set image leaks of Joaquin Phoenix portraying the character has created a lot of hype for this installment.
The Goldfinch (October 11)
Nicole Kidman stars in this adaptation of Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, about a teenage boy whose life is changed after he survives a terrorist attack in New York City.
Frozen 2 (November 22)
Yes, they couldn’t let it go! Elsa and Anna are back for another magical musical experience in this sequel, further exploring their frosty adventures.
Jumanji 2 (December 13)
The first Jumanji was a comedic remake of the 1995 film of the same name. Dwayne Johnson, with his power-packed crew, didn’t fail to impress and made us fall in love with the franchise all over again. It takes place directly after the first film, revolving around the protagonists getting trapped in a video game.
Star Wars: Episode IX
The Skywalker saga comes to an end as J.J. Abrams steps back into the director chair, one last time, to conclude the epic sci-fi movie series. Fans were conflicted with the previous movie, ‘The Last Jedi’. Yet, they all will eventually come together to see the culmination of this new trilogy!
2019 is set to be one of the brightest years of cinema, and all these movies are surely going to keep us hyped throughout!
